​Calligraphy Course Overview

​Lauchean's Beginner Calligraphy Courses are generally taught using the
broad edged pen. However, she also teaches Cursive Script (hand writing), Pointed Pen Script, Modern Pen Brush Calligraphy and Pointed Brush Lettering.

Getting off to an exciting New Start" in 2025, Lauchean's Calligraphy Courses and Workshops will focus on the Italic Hand. The Italic script will be taught using the broad edged pen. Italic, being a very versatile hand, is open to modification and lends itself as a perfect base for a number of beautiful modern calligraphy styles.

Italic is a foundation style for cursive handwriting, written with monoline pens, Modern Calligraphy using pointed nibs, Brush lettering written with Brush Pens, Pointed Brushes and even flat brushes. There is a lot of fun to be had as students develop their skills across various tools.

What ever you choose to study, whether you are learning the Italic Hand, any other historical calligraphic hands or alphabet styles, the journey is the same. First you will establish the key characteristics through a series of basic calligraphy strokes. You will gain basic pen skills a good understanding of the individual style shapes, letter groups and spacing.

Work on exercises and patterns to develop confidence with the tools, these will build into fun creative projects laying the foundations for further explorations. Learn fundamental design techniques to gain knowledge and confidence to produce beautiful artworks. As mindfulness within your practice helps you to focus and relax you will find that calligraphy becomes a meditation. 
 
Receive comprehensive notes and exemplars with detailed instructions.
Students all get loads of individual attention with limited class numbers in a dedicated spacious classroom studio. Step by step instructions guide you through the lessons at your own pace.
 
All groups will include students of varying levels of skill, the advantage being an inspiring shared learning experience. Everyone has something unique to share, including insights, resources and passion. Students will glimpse how creative skills develop with practice, patience and perseverance.

STARTERS COURSE CONTENT:
 Complete beginners
  • Getting started: Holding the pen & setting up your desk
  • Introduction to 2 styles, history & development
  • Laying the Foundations – alphabet basics
  • Letter and word spacing with minuscules (lowercase)
  • How to rule lines and making line ruling templates
  • Margins, page proportions and basic layouts
  • Capitals – Roman Letter Proportions & letter spacing
  • Playful, creative skill building exercises
  • Letter weights and contrasts: size, weight & colour
  • An introduction to using a range of inks and gouaches
  • Creating layouts with thumbnail templates
  • Basic cut and paste methods
  • Practical projects: Creating small artworks
  • An introduction to studio materials, tools their use

  • Introduction to the styles, history & development

  • Mixing and writing with gouache
  • Working on special papers
  • The colour wheel - understanding and using colours
  • Practical exercises to develop basic design methods

  • Practical projects: simple layouts
  • Creative techniques applied to projects
  • Introduction to new tools
  • Applying new tools to familiar script styles

Materials Supplied

  • ​A starter kit including: Pen holders, nib, inks, papers, extensive notes and guidelines for each style.
  • OR a starter kit including: Pilot parallel Pen, Ink Cartridges, paper, extensive notes and guidelines for each style.
  • Brush Lettering kit includes: Brush Pens, pointed water brushes and a real brush. Graph papers, extensive notes.
  • ​Studio Materials: A variety of special pens, nibs, inks, gouaches, metalic inks, other art materials, special papers & much more!!
